Bilateral Trade Imbalances

چکیده
In standard quantitative models, bilateral trade imbalances are determined by aggregate imbalances, expenditure and production patterns, wedges. We calibrate such a model using recent data on incomes, factor endowments, sector-level expenditures, outputs flows for 40 economies the rest of world. Large pairwise asymmetries in wedges needed model’s bilateral-trade predictions to match data. They account 21-35% deviation imbalances. Aggregate play minor role, while more than 50% variation is explained international differences patterns.

Dynamic Patterns of Trade Imbalances
Based on the recursive preference approach, the dynamic and global properties of the two-country open economy are examined with one good and inputs of labor and capital, with capital being freely traded internationally. First by showing that the world’s consumption increases (resp. decreases) with an increase (resp. decrease) in the world’s capital, the global stability of the economy is obtain...
متن کاملAsymmetric Trade Costs, Trade Imbalances, and the World Income Distribution
Earlier work by Waugh (2010) suggests that asymmetric market access costs across exporting countries are a major reason for differences in real per-capita income around the globe: 25% − 50% (depending on the measure) of world income inequality could be explained by cross-country trade cost asymmetries alone. We show that these results were driven by what we call model under-specification, an il...
متن کاملGlobal Trade Imbalances: a Network Approach
We study trade imbalances between world countries in the period 1960-2000 using a complex-network approach. We show that trade imbalances in absolute value are characterized by a hierarchical arrangement wherein few rich economies display high clustering and carry an important amount of global-trade imbalances. In contrast, trade imbalances in relative terms show a more fragmented topology, wit...

متن کاملEfficient Bilateral Trade
We re-examine the canonical question of Myerson and Satterthwaite (1983) whether two privately-informed parties, a buyer and a seller, can trade an indivisible good efficiently. We relax their assumption that utilities are quasi-linear; our main assumption instead is that the traded good is normal. We show that efficient trade is possible if agents’ utility functions are not too responsive to p...
